Explore what performance coaching is about and what it could mean for you Performance coaching is directed at your very specific goals, whether they are in sports, the arts or any other area that requires you to perform at your best.
For example, we recently coached a well-known actress to enter what she described as ‘the right frame of mind’ to interpret and portray a character at an audition for a major T.V part.
With sports clients much of the work is around getting in the zone of ‘Flow’, which is again a very personal mental state. However, research has demonstrated nine fundamentals of this state:
1. A balance between the challenge and the level of skill 2. Action-Awareness merging 3. Clearly envisaged goals 4. Unambiguous feedback 5. Focus on the task at hand 6. A sense of control 7. Loss of self-consciousness 8. Transformation of time 9. Autotelic experiences (the activity is satisfying in itself – Sebastian Coe once said he just loved the feeling of running)
As an example, from our work with a martial arts exponent his greatest improvement has come through developing the ability to shut out distractions and focus solely on his opponent.
Similarly some of the biggest performance improvements for our World Rally Car drivers has come from shutting out thoughts about mistakes to focus solely on the current section – and enjoying the drive!
Some other key abilities are: staying optimistic when not winning; focusing on the performance and not the result; engaging all one’s senses to do more than just visualise the goal.
